GC Victorious Bags in CRO Race
BAHRAIN Victorious won the overall CRO (GC) race for the second consecutive year, as Matej Mohoric sprinted to second place in the final Stage 6 yesterday.
Before the concluding day (166 km from Sveta Nedelja to Zagreb), Mohoric was second overall, eight seconds behind leader Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo Visma) and with the same time as Oscar Onley (DSM) who finished third.
With nothing to lose from the start, the riders of Victorious (TBV) gave their best to overtake the GC leader and win the red jersey following the effort of Stevie Williams in 2021.
The first attempt was successful as Mohoric won the first intermediate sprint, ahead of Onley and teammate Jonathan Milan, and took three bonus seconds, reducing the virtual gap to the GC to five seconds.
Jumbo Visma reacted by placing a rider in the breakaway of the day at 5 to prevent Mohoric from taking any more precious seconds from his leader. But the breakaway was caught 10km from the finish, and the next attack by the green jersey Guerin (Team Voralberg) for the KOM points was also neutralized.
On the last day, the riders also had to tackle a technical and hilly circuit with cobblestones in the city of Zagreb. The TBV runners controlled the final, with Milan overtaking Mohoric to sprint to second place behind Elia Viviani (Ineos Grenadiers).
Thanks to those precious bonus seconds, the Slovenian rider won the GC with just one second over Vingaard and seven seconds over Onley, who took third place.
Apart from the red jersey, Bahrain Victorious also secured the points classification, with Milan winning the blue jersey in this edition.
Yesterday’s results capped off a successful week for the team, with two wins and a podium at each stage.
