Are you coming home for the holidays? here is 4 things you need to do now.
During this holiday season, when people are balancing big purchases and giving back, it helps to learn more about the organizations that regularly bring food and support to a variety of communities. Here are five charities that save lives through their tireless work. Any of these nonprofits would appreciate your support during the holidays and beyond.
1. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
A leader in childhood cancer research, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital provides a host of services to families whose children are battling cancer and other life-threatening pediatric illnesses. The organization is focused on research and treatment, and St. Jude has even helped improve the survival rate of children with cancer. St. Jude relies heavily on individual contributions. This support means families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, accommodation or food.
2. American Red Cross
No one can predict disaster, but the American Red Cross – and Red Cross organizations around the world – are already prepared. The organization’s mission is to support those affected by disaster by providing care, shelter and the support of a strong community of volunteers. The Red Cross, which also organizes blood drives and lifesaving trainings like CPR, prides itself on remaining neutral in conflicts while helping alleviate suffering.
3. World Central Cuisine
Founded by chef José Andrés and his wife Patricia, World Central Kitchen strives to “empower communities and strengthen economies” through food. The association provides hot meals to communities in need, especially in times of crisis. Whether it’s feeding people in Puerto Rico, Australia or Central America, World Central Kitchen offers emergency food assistance as well as food safety training and chef support.
4. America mental health
Founded in 1909, Mental Health America has spent more than a century putting mental wellness first. The mission of the community organization is focused on crisis prevention, early identification and intervention with people at risk. In addition to offering mental health screenings and tools and tips for tackling a variety of wellness challenges, Mental Health America also connects people with places that offer help.
5.charity: water
With an estimated 785 million people worldwide without basic drinking water service, according to the World Health Organization, nonprofits such as Charity: Water have stepped in to create a better access to one of the basic necessities of life. After all, without clean water, communities are more prone to disease. Not only that, but members of these communities often sacrifice other necessities such as education and work to seek a viable water source. Since its launch in 2006, Charity: Water has funded more than 79,000 water-related projects in 29 countries. And because private donors fund the running costs of the organization, 100% of individual donations go to fund water projects.
